Who’s watching who?

“Light knows when you’re looking at it,” says James Turrell. With his Glass Works he has turned light into an encounter. If you have ever encountered Elliptical Glass, Small Glass Piece or any other element in this series you will begin to understand James – for example when he talks about his medium being the perception of the viewer and when he says he hopes that when you view the art you are observing yourself.

Fine-tuning by the master

The entire structure of Elliptical Glass and Small Glass Piece was designed and manufactured as a single unit by feno. Together with James Turrell, we set up his precisely defined color spaces and the specially programmed sequencer on site at feno. James was particularly keen to have the color of the glow slowly change from the center outwards. This subtle dynamic creates a captivating pull effect on the eye, with vision soon getting lost between a supposedly infinite depth and incredible flatness.
