Hikers leaving Hotel Castell in Zuoz (Switzerland) on their way to the mountains soon come across a neat round brick building – a kind of medieval guard-house. Once inside, they are standing in a circular room with a circular opening in the ceiling. There is only one object they can see through this opening: the sky.
Gazing upward becomes a meditative act. Passing clouds weave abstract patterns, and as the sun sets the color of this window to the sky changes, little by little, until it is quite black. The light inside the room also changes just as imperceptibly, in a silent dialog with the section of sky, deceiving the eye with complementary colors … This highly sensitive interplay between natural and artificial light called for a control system of exceptional precision to translate twilight into accurate fading operations, intensifying the effect of this work of art. Visitors leave this cosmic chamber as if in a trance.
